Somnoplasty: A surgical treatment for sleep
apnea and to stop snoring

If you or someone you know is having trouble with snoring or sleep
apnea, please inquire about your suitability for Somnoplasty. This
is a new procedure utilizing radio frequency to replace the severely
invasive techniques previously used in the treatment of certain
sleep disorders. There is little or no hospitalization, virtually
no discomfort, and the cost is significantly lower than traditional
treatment. Ask to view our video tapes or set up a consultation
appointment.
How is it done? Somnoplasty uses low-temperature radio
waves to treat a well-defined area in the soft palate. A special
needle is inserted into the mouth toward the back of the throat.
Then radiofrequency energy is delivered beneath the surface of the
soft palate, called the mucosa. The electrode delivers heat like
a microwave and shrinks down the enlarged tissue opening up the
area. This enables you to breathe better which, in turn, minimizes
snoring.
Where is it done? The procedure would take place either
in the doctor's office for a snoring treatment or in the surgery
center for sleep apnea cases. If your insurance covers the procedure,
Dr. Yee is contracted with Mercy Hospital of Folsom, The Folsom
Surgery Center, and Marshall MedicalCenter.
How long does it take? The actual procedure only takes
about 15 minutes. Total office visit time is about 1-1.5 hours.
This includes paperwork, numbing, procedure, and discharge instructions.
How will I feel afterwards? Most people who have Somnoplasty
in the office are able to return to work the same day. There will
be some throat discomfort that feels like a sore throat for approximately
two weeks. You may not be able to eat all foods the first day, but
that is an individual tolerance. However, it should not stop you
from eating. If done in the hospital or surgery center, anesthesia
will make you feel drowsy and, for some, nauseated. For this reason
you must have a ride home. However, most people recover from that
in a day or so, depending on the person.
How long has this procedure been around? Dr. Yee has been
performing this procedure since 1998. Dr. Yee is the most experienced
doctor with this procedure in Northern CA and is Board Certified.
He was certified by undergoing mass training specific to the procedure.

convenience or call to have some informational packets sent in the
mail.
How long before my snoring stops? It usually takes about
two months to know if the procedure worked or not. The first month
your snoring will be worse due to the swelling. After your second
month you will follow-up with Dr. Yee to discuss effectiveness or
to schedule your second procedure, if needed.
